Research themes

  • The symbolical approach of the English Algebraical Network, and how it was trnasformed in the 2d part of the 19th century.
  • Historiography of arithmetic and algebra in the 19th century.
  • Studies of the mechanization of calculation, in the work of predicting tides before the introduction of computers.
  • Relations between algebra and logic from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, following the work undertaken for Cahiers Critiques de Philosophie n° 3 et dans le volume surL’analogie dans la démarche scientifique, perspective historique (voir publications).
  • Mathematical machines, between Babbage's analytical machine and the production of computers, as an extension of my involvement in the ACI Histoire des Savoirs project on “The instruments of learned calculation”, with essentially the approaches of D. R Hartree (1897-1958) in England and Claude E. Shannon (1916-2001) in the USA on the differential analyzer, followed by Max H. A. Newman (1897-1984), Alan M. Turing (1912-1954) and John R. Womersley (1907-1958) on the development of computers in England up to EDSAC.
